A family story rooted in Thessaloniki
I was born and raised in Thessaloniki, and my family’s story has been woven into the life of this city for generations.
A restaurant where every table had a story
In 1932, my grandfather, George, opened a small restaurant on Konstantinou Palaiologou Street, in the heart of Thessaloniki.
For more than four decades, it welcomed locals, workers, merchants, professors, priests, travelers, and old friends who gathered around the same tables.
Like many traditional restaurants in Greece, it was much more than a place to eat. It was where people exchanged news, debated politics, celebrated milestones, and shared stories that were passed from one generation to the next.
There was one tradition my family never forgot.
Every single day, there was always a plate of fasolada, Greece’s traditional bean soup, set aside for widows and orphans who could not afford a meal.
It was not charity for recognition. It was not something people talked about. It was simply the way things were done.
Craftsmanship in post-war Thessaloniki
When World War II came to an end, another chapter of our family’s story began.
My grandmother’s brother, Vasilis, opened a custom shoemaking workshop on Morgentau Street in the city center, crafting handmade shoes to order.
His workshop became part of everyday life in post-war Thessaloniki, serving generations of customers who valued quality, craftsmanship, and the personal relationship between artisan and client.
Growing up, I was surrounded by both worlds.
